Java – share links – perform operations in the background

I have an application that will accept the URL from the built-in web browser through the "shared page" menu item. I'm using the send intent, and it works normally. However, I want to accept a URL and process it in the background, I don't want users to have to leave the web browser. It will notify users through a toast message that it has finished processing the URL. I'm just not sure what type of activity should be used

A good example of this behavior is the "read later" instapaper application in the Android Market. Any help will be appreciated
