Using java zip files: are there any restrictions?

I am creating backup routines for Java applications

I'm also testing Apache commons compression to tar GZ, but its file name is limited to 100 characters I want to test the API compression, but I don't know what the Java zip problem is

So the real question is: did I do something wrong, limit the implementation of Java zip, or the limitation of ZIP format itself?
