What has been added to Java language levels 7.0 and 8.0?

I just noticed that the Java language level 7.0 and 8.0 options were selected in IntelliJ (under project settings)

Where can I find a concise description of these enablers? Level 7.0 is used to enable "dimonds" (what is this?), String in switch (cool!) And "wait..."?

Level 8.0 has "type annotations", I don't know

Do I have to use the appropriate JDK to set a higher level? IntelliJ doesn't seem to mind if I set language level 7.0 and JDK 1.6
