Alternatives to Java applets

I'm going to write a simple program to graphically display my college students' course prerequisites (i.e. networks as vertices and edges) I want to embed the program into the web page to avoid the trouble of people downloading executable files

At present, I am looking to make my program a java applet (Java can also give me access to the convenient swing Library), but I don't like the fact that applets can't be viewed on most mobile devices

What are the alternatives to applets for such projects? I want it to be compatible with as many devices as possible without having to build graphical content from scratch

The last consideration is that I do this mainly for learning and practice Ideally, the tools I will use will help me understand in the future

Solution

Please do not use applets They have been fully abandoned

The best way is to use HTML / JS / CSS There are many useful libraries available to help you accomplish this task JQuery seems obvious, but there is D3 JS or vis JS is used to display the visual representation of data and for responsive guidance (mobile friendliness)
