Java – how to automatically generate reports using Jasper reports

I'm studying NetBeans and want to use Jasper reports to "automatically generate" reports

This is a transaction: I want to create a form that requires a date frame for SQL query and provide this information; Then format it and generate a PDF report from it

I see Jasper reports compiled using Jasper's JRXML file to generate the report I would like to know whether JRXML can be generated automatically through some API code, or whether the JRXML file needs to be edited "programmatically" to generate reports automatically
